You used to be able to upload from your computer but that's since been done away with. It's best to host it!!!

Yeah, most forums don't host avatars no big deal. But most don't provide a button leading to a perfectly functional upload page to do just that if they won't save and display the avatar. I'm sure you're just being helpful, and it's probably not your job to fix such things and stuff so I hope this didn't just sound whiny.
Maybe they could remove that section of the Avatar support page, or include a disclaimer that it doesn't work and they don't know how to remove the button or something. That way newbies like myself don't bump their heads quite so hard on this particularly jagged piece of forum infrastructure.
Occurs to me there might be an obvious message to that effect that I missed. (that's usually the case when I complain like this)
