I don't know where the word "Soccer" comes from. I think the North American's made up that name to much distain to the English. For their sweet revenge, they call American Football "Gridiron" in the UK.
How's that for mind blowing?

Brilliant I had a very interesting conversation with a Friend of mine on the bus to the Campus parking lots and we started talking about football I asked him what his favorite team was and he said Manchester united I promptly replied "What!" then we had a nice fat conversation over which football was better. it was mindblowing and new to me but thanks to ol Sinope I'm am Educated to a fine degree in the Kickball Game know as Soccer football (Insert french words) and other fancy names for the game.

You should try it here. We have Rugby League, Rugby Union, AFL and Soccer.
It's a bitch trying to explain to a pom or kiwi that footy is AFL rugby is rugby, league or football depending where you're from, union is shit and soccer is soccer. It gets confusing

Wow. Interesting conversation and worthy of debate. Football... better to watch. More drama and it requires more team work. It also requires a full gambit of personal skills. They need big guys, fast guys, tough guys and precise guys. It is very similar to war. It takes both grit and power as well as a light tough and strategy.
Soccer however is a sport that is universal to everyone around the world. You can play it from 2yrs old to 85. Girls and guys all get the same experience. You don't need any special equipment to play and can be played in on a dirt road with a plastic milk jug (or head of disposed dictator). You barely even have to understand the rules to start a game of footie.
Let me make a case for hockey though. Hockey is one of those weirdo sports but... when you get to the age where you can no longer play contact sports (30's 40's) it is by far the best thing you will ever do in your life. Your whole world changes. It is so addictive and exhilarating that everything in your life changes so it "makes you better at hockey". You get in the mindset of a finely tuned athlete. You sniff out pick up games like they do poker games in "Rounders". Out of all the sports that I've played, it by far is the one that gets you in the athletic mode. Since I started playing four years ago, I've made two beer league teams full of rookies and everyone has the same experience.
