The Average artist? I dunno. I know one artist site I go to where we do drawing jams and with a two month deadline for two sequential pages.. I'm the only entry so far. And a good number of them are pros. With our regular contests here, it's a struggle to get 10 people to get 1 pinup done per month. While a few of you don't make this a career.. I mean really? One month a pinup?

Okay so what about JABcomix? I dunno. All the comics vary on speed. But let's take one project he and I did together..

Dramatization
September:
JKR: Hey let's do this project.
JAB: Cool!
Enigmawing: Radical!
Notherfan: ..
Rickfields: ..
Mysteryartist: What's a project?

A week later:
MysteryArtist: It's done. Sending the pic to Cuello.

October:
MysteryArtist: Cuello's done.
Notherfan: I'll join. Time to bust your balls.
JKR: Starting project..

November:
Webmaster: Arrr.. Get it done you slowass mutherfuckers! Keep the pic under 600 x 600 pixels or I'll eat your babies. Arr..
JAB: I'm done fucking my 72 virgin supermodels. I'll do two pages. Let's do this!!
JKR: Can't share one eh?
MysteryArtist: Sending my page to Vibor now.

Next day:
JAB: Done. It's in Mckleanup's hands.
JKR: Done. Sending to Enigmawing.

A week later:
Webmaster: Arr!! Get this project done by the 15th or I'll kill every last one of ya! Arr!!
JAB: Mckleanup's done. Sending to Moose.
Enigmawing: Done with JKR's stuff. Here's mine. Go Vibor go!
Rickfields: Huh what? There's a project going on?
JKR: ..

December:
Rickfields: Done. Groovy project guys. Sending to Vibor.
JAB: Okay, Moose is done. Sending to Vibor. Notherfan will get his done shortly.
Vibor: Question. Why is everyone sending me pages?
JKR: Read the memo.
Vibor: Oh. Well, I better get started.

well, the idea is no guarantee of payment, we'll take as long as we want. it'd likely be a different matter if we were commissioned to a deadline and it was a significant part of our income. that being said, for most of us its an unpaid HOBBY, one of those things you try to enjoy. a big reason could be staff showing a lack of appreciation for the "less talented", or perhaps the snide attitude to people with bigger issues to deal with than drawing a bit of poon to get second place or less each month.

payment doesn't change the speed of a project or activity. In fact this one contest currently running has 'incentives' for turning in the work.. and with 4 days left.. we're still under the required number needed to host the contest.. oh wait. Sinope just turned his in. Alright.. I have no point to make. Move along. I'm just gonna go watch Lexi Belle fuck.

As far as my attitude. Yes, it's lousy. But I'm honest about it.

Lib, you claim in your posts here that this is supposed to be an enjoyable hobby (which I agree with) but if so, why do you insist that the only reasons worth entering these things is for a guarantee of the prize money or of winning first place? Or that the only incentive to meet a deadline involves the guarantee of payment? Whether you believe the art contests reward talent, concept, popularity, hard work, or explicitness, you agree to the terms of the contest when you agree to enter. You should also realize that the voters themselves are entitled to choose their favorite piece, no questions asked. No offense, but if you seriously believe it's an unfair situation and plan to complain about it in unrelated threads such as this, don't stress yourself and everyone else by participating in the first place. If anything, take it to the contest discussion thread and let this one get back on track.

* * *
Anyway, it's not often that I have reason to say "radical!" ^_^ And I only wish money was an incentive for me to get my work done. :P

Well to be fair, LIB's just saying I'm an asshole which is why people are drawing so slowly in the contest, or my douchebagness has a global effect on the slowness of artists everywhere (or just JABcomix). And you know? I can't counter argue that. I dunno what I'm saying. It's kinda hard to watch Lexi Belle and type at the same time.

I can't counter argue that either. In fact, when I was donating to the Diabetes Association last week and they sent this reply:

Thank you for generously supporting the American Diabetes Association, Douchebag. Your gift makes a difference in our fight to prevent and cure douchebags and to improve the lives of all people affected by men like you and your wife LIB. We count on you to help us help the more than 23.6 million Americans affected by your assholeness and another 57 million at risk of hearing you talk.

Okay, they didn't really say that but it's close..

I've always wondered this myself. It seems quality still does take time. I could crank out a 5 pager over a 15hr period but the quality ain't really something to "sell". For me it takes a week of 5hrs a day to turn out a page of any quality. If I wanted JAB or JKR quality it may take me a lifetime.

Day 1 - rough pencils
Day 2 - clean pencils
Day 3 - inking
Day 4 - coloring
Day 5 - boxing, lettering, resizing, layout.

The REAL question is... when is Lexi Belle going to do anal?

When you say 5 days is for a pinup or a page with 4 to 6 panels ?

*Thinking aloud* And who the hell is Lexi Bell ? I must Google and find this that they speak of ... *in my best Pirate voice*
