It's the "refining" stage I have difficulty with. I also have trouble with the shading itself, trying to determine where the light source is.

I learned light/shadows doing a lot of realistic drawings. It's a matter of experience, I think. I've already seen some tutorials showing how to simplify shapes in a way you can determine easily how shadows will behave. This one can be useful for you:

About the refining, there's a lot of techniques, depending on the artist. I developed my own techniques based on Linda's tutorials:

This girl is one of the best artists on this planet, in my opinon. Take a look on her tuts. They're pretty worthy.

Why are you hopeless, my friend? If I can get, you can too. I'm not a Superman, just a regular guy. What you need to make stuff like that is:
1. A tablet
2. Patience
3. Dedication
4. Knowledge.
Not necessarily in this order. Unfortunately, the only one that money can buy is the tablet. Patience and dedication you have to develop by yourself. And knowledge, thanks god (and the Web) is pretty easy to find nowadays.
There's a lot of great tutorials on the web, and i learned a lot with any of them. You can walk this path too...

dont forget... number 5. spare time  ;)
